Gone Girl

Gone Girl is not so gone, after all.

I recently watched Gone Girl out of curiosity and to see what made this film such a big ‘hit’; there are lots of nominations by the Academy Awards, Grammy’s, etc.

I, for one, am confused as to why this movie is getting so many amazing recommendations. But, I guess it’s my job to tell you the pros and cons, right?

Let’s start off with Nick Dunne, the hot husband of the missing wife, Amy Dunne. The movie starts off quick and straight to the point on Nick’s personality; he’s emotionless, lazy, and a complete slob. On the other hand, Amy Dunne is this beautiful go-getter who has had other guys kiss the ground she walks on—many are puzzled as to why she is with a guy like Nick, anyway.

Nick and Amy met at some work party and Nick quickly swept Amy off her feet. They walked around the neighborhood, stopped at a corner, and that’s where Nick first ever laid his lips on Amy (he had a signature move). You can guess what happens next.

Fast forwarding, they are in Amy’s book publishing party when Nick proposes to her. This was presumed ‘the happiest day of her life.’

Now, I don’t know about everyone else and maybe it’s just because I watch too many movies, but I already knew within 10 minutes into the movie that the woman, Amy Dunne, is a complete, utter psychopath. How can you tell? She is narrating. NEWS FLASH! If you want to create a ‘plot twist,’ don’t give it away with such little details like that. Knowing the plot twist had me feeling like I should rip out a strand of my hair for every minute lost watching this film. It was agonizing.

Anyways, this abnormally genius psycho sets up this whole murder scene to frame her indifferent and sex-using husband. The whole movie is based on all of the clues she had left for their anniversary, a ‘treasure hunt’ kind of thing for Nick. This makes up all the evidence to claim Nick Dunne guilty.

What happens at the end of the movie? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. NOTHING. As if the movie couldn’t get any crappier, she comes back to Nick and stays with him and says that it is impossible for him to leave her and survive (which is very true). That’s it. After all that mental woman did and what the police and Nick had to go through, it takes them all the way back to the beginning and starts from scratch.

This movie was absolutely terrible and I have no idea why it has had so many nominations… I understand in the sense of Rosamund Pike’s acting, but everything else, seriously? This doesn’t deserve any award! And what made me even more angry was that this movie was so flawlessly executed that the plot shouldn’t even have been that evident but they just had to go and mess it up.

I give this movie 3 out of 5 stars.
